Im listening to two different recordings this morning and enjoying them both tremendouly. First we have Chris Turner’s “Monk Tape”
I first found out about Chris Turner from a Bilal show that was happening in Portland, OR. The funny thing is that my keyboardist/Musical Director’s name is also Chris Turner so a bunch of us in the audience was freaking out. lol! One of the reason I love this 5 track recording so much is because of its fresh revamping of jazz standards. In my opinion there is a good way and bad way to approach making jazz standards more modern & hip and this one does it right. I hope you enjoy it as well.
The second album is by Portland’s own Esperanza Spalding. Esperanza Spalding, the first jazz artist to win the GRAMMY for Best New Artist, releases her new album, Radio Music Society, on March 20, and NPR Music is giving fans a chance to hear it in its entirety before its release.
The album, a fusion of jazz, pop and soul, features the uplifting lead single “Black Gold”, which includes soul singer Algebra Blessett. Preview the album, pre-order it today and check out the album trailer below.
